After 1000+ hours in the game you tend to know what you can and can't do without checking every little detail. My current unfair run (but only Normal kingdom difficulty) I dismissed most of the companions. I have 5 advisors as mercs. The -4 penalty hurts a lot; they're definitely suboptimal, but they mostly work.

There is a lot more variety and cool minor effects sprinkled over the game when compared to KM and that is just more fun. WotR has a lot more reactivity to your race, class and choices when compared to Kingmaker and that is pretty fun. The visuals in WotR are definetly a step above KM, i doubt anyone would deny it. This is going to be a divided topic. I like the companions for both, but generally prefer Kingmaker companions. Arushalae, Nenio, and Ember are all awesome, and to me, much more interesting than companions like Jubilost, Linzi or Amiri.
